Worked here for a couple weeks. Foods not bad if you don’t mind a lot of your food coming pre-packaged. You’re getting the same quality of food from an Applebees. A lot of items are fully prepared before being sent to Healthy Meals. Salsa, guacamole, dressings, etc. A lot of meals that incorporate chicken - roughly 50% of the time - I was using precooked chicken that arrived in vacuum sealed bags. Any breaded fish you’re getting is also pre-breaded before arriving to the facility. There are some meals that are completely made in house - but it seemed rare. Some of the proteins were handmade by staff. But a lot were quick thawed from frozen the day of preparing the meal. I was instructed to boil some of the frozen bags in order to prepare it. They tried to pass it off as “sous vide” meat… but they weren’t maintaining a consistent water temperature or ensuring that it was in safe packaging that could withstand that level of heat without leeching into the food. There was also a pretty big fruit fly problem. It was hard to ice any cakes or pour salad dressings without fruit flies swarming you or sticking to the icing. Could have been easily resolved, but it seemed like the KM wasn’t making any attempts to fix it. I eventually left due to personal issues with the KM. Didn’t seem to prioritize training me, but then would get dramatically upset at me for asking simple questions. He accused me of pushing my “trauma” onto him when I told him I have a medical issue concerning my eyesight (I have problems reading small labels) and couldn’t locate an item. Then also accused me of being an untrustworthy/unreliable employee - for asking a very simple question about the sink faucet. It was maybe my 6th shift I had ever worked with them… I think it’s completely understandable for a new employee to still have “silly” questions at that point of training. I also didn’t appreciate the passive aggressive meeting the KM had alone with me. It was strange that he didn’t ask any other team members to sit in on the meeting - just as a witness to the conversation. His angry and rude demeanor towards me made me feel very uncomfortable. I decided to leave after that. I’ll admit that I didn’t put in my two weeks and properly quit like I would have liked. I did try reaching out to the owner to talk about my concerns, but never heard a response back. The owner seemed like a nice enough guy, but I don’t think he’s particularly knowledgeable about the food industry… I get the feeling that he leaves everything in the hands of the KM. Not a good game plan IMO, especially if your KM is someone who openly discusses details of your divorce to new employees. If I were the owner, I would find someone to replace the KM immediately. Seems like the KM is demeaning to his employees, doesn’t really care about the owner, and doesn’t see any issues with the quality of the food. I got the feeling that the KM has worked there too long, is burned out, and just doesn’t care anymore. I honestly still have no clue what the real issue was - this is all speculation. But I doubt I’m the first employee he’s chased away. It’s too bad it didn’t work out… Other than the KM, it was very relaxed and laid back. The dishwasher and ladies I worked with were really great (especially the receptionist, she was so welcoming. Don’t ever let her leave) It’s honestly a good job with great hours, decent starting pay. The owner often brought in snacks and usually made a daily appearance to say hi. He was even planning a Christmas party for the crew before I left. It’s hard to find a place like this in the restaurant industry. I just hope for the owner’s sake that he gets it figured out soon. I don’t think they’ll be able to compete long-term with nationally recognized meal delivery services if they don’t improve the quality of their food and work environment.
