We camped here one night. The stars are amazing in the dark sky! The Broken Wheel campground is very dry and weedy. Campground host very friendly and helpful. The dunes are great, but so hot in the direct sun! Found a cool type of bug - the Thistle Down Velvet Ant.

The only thing I didn't love was the Mosquitoes. Everything else was great, and I cant wait to come back! Not a lot of shade so be prepared for that, but the camp grounds are well kept and very clean.

Did I know Idaho had sand dunes? Nope. Did anyone know they had dunes? Probably not. Let me tell you though… they were insanely amazing! I hiked one of the smaller ones, and I thought I was in decent shape, but the dune proved otherwise. It’s October so it was a little chilly and VERY windy. I was afraid if I climbed a bigger one, I would have been blown all the way back to the East coast. As amazing as the dunes were, the surrounding trails and lake offered even more breathtaking views. I saw a lot of ducks, geese, birds and flowers. I was in total awe of the whole experience. Idaho has definitely proved its more than just a flyover state. Can’t wait to come back and explore it more during a different time of year!

Hiking the dunes is a fun different experience. The Park is nice with flush toilets, showers and sinks in the campground. The dunes day use area has vault toilets and a picnic shelter. The exception is poor signage. The sign marking the trail for the big dune is on the ground behind some weeds and is only about 6 inches tall and maybe 18 inches long. Look at the picture and see if you can find the sign. Other than that it's an enjoyable place.

Sounds like a great suggestion. Frequent high winds that maintain the dunes might be problematic at times.

The observatory is only open April through October. The area is still great for star gazing on your own though, as its far from any city lights.

Yes it is. We just ask that dogs remain on leash and keep off the beach.
