The tour guide was wonderful, and she was quite informative. I was very surprised that she allowed us the use the very narrow stairs (secret passageway) around the fireplace to ascend from the first to third floor. See pic of stair entrance. Anyone who is claustrophobic can use the regular stairs. Hawthorne's birth home is next door, which is also included with the admission.

When planning our trip to Salem, my mom was adamant on scheduling a guided tour here. I had no idea what to expect due to my little knowledge surrounding Nathanial Hawthorne besides The Crucible. This place is so cool! I love that it’s inclusive for all ages, and optionally interactive. Stepping in the house felt like I was traveling back in time. Our tour guide was so so nice, incredibly knowledgeable, and made for a super engaging trip. Outside of the home, there’s a really beautiful view of the water and a lovely garden. Definitely a highlight of my trip to Massachusetts and so worth venturing out if you’re thinking about it :)

What an incredible place to visit! The history and back stories of this beautiful place is something that can't be missed while visiting Salem. It's connection to authors Nathaniel Hawthorne makes it even more special. Our guide Rachel was very informative and presented an excellent tour!

Very cool place. Interior showcases the affluent of New England over several generations and owners. The women of the house were more impressive than the men particularly given the time period. Interesting that Hawthorne made the house come alive as opposed to the other way around. Grounds and views are nice too.

We are celebrating the 350th anniversary of the mansion, built in 1668.
It's $14 for the house tour, which is the only way to see the interior. It's a good tour, both fun and informative. $9 will get you a grounds ticket,. You can explore the gardens and visit the other historic properties which are self guided.
He wrote the book after spending time in the house, then owned by his relatives.
Think of the peak of a roof and the two sides that come down to meet the outside walls. That triangle is a gable end. The space behind it is the gable, sometimes known as attic space. The whole prism shape formed is a gable.
Not sure.. but tour guide did not mention it. It is a fabulous tour. Loved it..

Yes it's very cool but very akward
Lot is small so plan accordingly. Best time, we found, was late afternoon or early evening.
The gift shop is huge
It's in the middle of being redone. Not shabby but a process. A complicated one, I would imagine, with a place that old and important.
Hour and a bit. I would strongly reccomend the guided tour to get the story
