I have been a guest chef many times for this facility and have always found the staff to be courteous and caring. The guests are respectful and kind to each other from what I can see while serving dinner and eating with residents. I have cooked good food along with fellow congregants of my Temple many times, and I hope it provided some degree of comfort. I encourage others to sign up to do the same!

Homelessness is a multifaceted problem. Part of the problem is housing costs that have gone up because of the lack of affordable housing. Part of the problem is wages have not grown at the same rate as the cost of living. Part of the problem is lack of housing units to accommodate an ever growing population. A great percentage of people do not make enough money to save for emergencies, and when one comes up, it is a matter of chosing sometimes life over housing. Homeless people come from all walks of life, young, old, able-bodied, disabled, mentally ill, substance abusers, recovering, abused, religious, atheist, veterans, survivors, single, with family, working, retired, etc. Ascencia has been trying for years to help the homeless, and was one of the first in the battle. Every agency is overwhelmed at this point. There are not nearly enough beds to accommodate all the homeless in Los Angeles and Ascencia tries to make the best out of a bad situation. They have a great board of directors, and management. Staff tries to be as helpful as possible. Other charities and churches help by providing meals to the shelter's residents. They make every effort they can to permanently house their clients, an uphill battle for many of the reasons stated above. Go to their website and make a donation. Help them lift people out of homelessness. Every little bit helps.
truth betold
currently living here at this shelter. its modern and clean. hot meals are served everyday for dinner at 6pm. sometimes there is breakfast but not everyday. they let you stay for 2 months in the emergency shelter program but some people have stayed longer if they are working or need extra time while finding a place. they tell you to save all of your money while you are there by turning in money orders to them. they hold it then give it back when you leave. they promise to help you find work but in reality its on you to find a place to work and then a place to live. they have said they will help with the security deposit on a place which is cool so we will see how that goes later...the best way to get in is not by signing up (wait list is more then 6 months) but by being referred through another place like a mental hospital or if you know someone that already stays in the shelter. overall its been helpful for me to stay here while i get my life together. thanks for being there

They changed the shower policy now you need to do appointment. I have no time to call everyday the same person just to take a shower you know how annoying is that for the person and me?Also when I went there they didn't had food and i am homeless for 9 months and is really shocking that they still do a excuse to not give me housing pretty bad it's this shelter.Other shelters they give me housing by following the list within 6 days (less than a week) they already had a space for me.If you trying to look for a housing and you are homeless do not come here not recommended.

Yes! We're always looking for volunteers, and we have many opportunities available. See details here: https://www.ascenciaca.org/volunteer/
Yes they do as long as the shelter is not under lock down
I dont think that's a good idea. However; trying to place someone anywhere is hard. If you have state aid go back and see what your assigned rep can do. Alot if th them take referrals only (hospitals; etc.) They do a triage type of order women with children women men. Each have their res up at 7b leave by 8:30 back by 6:00. You sign in n out. Find your closest State aid for help. Before you hang up from these shelters ask if there is somewhere else they know of. Good luck and God Bless.
This is more of a support shelter. They do have a shelter but there is a waiting list. You can shower, do laundry and have a case mgr while you wait for a bed. Need to be in line for in take at 7am
No you cant just show up at any time to shower you must call and scedule with a case mgr. Or someone at the front desk.
Depends what your circumstances are on how quick you get in, your rated by a point system about your needs, so for instantace if your terminal or have kids or are sick in some kind of way, then they bring you in sooner & I believe they only house homeless people from West Hollywood or Glendale! But you can go there daily Monday-Friday to shower or job search, or to get basics that you might need, they will give you a Case Manager to help you through the process! Good luck!
Ascencia has one large area on the second floor where the clients sleep. There are about 40 beds, each with two lockable drawers for which you supply the lock. The beds are in two designated areas, the women's side and the men's side divided by a wall. The men's side has some bunk beds, the women has none. Both sides have a restroom and shower area with three stalls and showers each. There is one family room for a family with an infant. There is also one family restroom for a family with an infant. If you are a woman with a male child over five, I believe, then the male child sleeps on the men's side and the mother on the women's side. Ascencia tries to be as accommodating as possible with the limited space they have. All residential clients have an assigned chore, whether it's washing the floors, doing the laundry, etc. Daily check-in starts at 4:30pm and must be in by 6:00pm, wake-up is at 05:45am and leave by 07:30, every day.
I knew a transgender person, that stayed there.
