This was the second mission church we have visited. It has a special place in our hearts. We had a close devotion to St Raphael during our courtship. We came to attend mass and give thanks for his intercession in our lives. The mission church was beautiful.

Very nice place to visit if you like historical churches and missions.

Wasn't really open when we went, and honestly not that much to see beyond the very pink facade of the main building and small church. Everything is really pretty, but easily skippable.

It is inspired by God. Interpreted by man . and devoted to service for those who cannot provide for themselves. It also includes depictions of the faith of our God. The sum total of all it's parts are it accepts resposibilty for the care of all God's people.
None of the original mission exists today. Today's San Rafael Mission which sits next to the Church of San Raphael is a replica mission. However, it was based on an idealized picture on a postcard, not the original mission as no known drawings or photos were discovered.
The original mission was founded in 1817 but completely destroyed by 1834. In 1949 the Hearst Fiundation granted funds to build a replica of the original church, even though no original plans were ever found. Nonetheless, folks believe that the replica mission is a fairly accurate representation.
It was made out of Adobe which is a brick made with clay and straw
As far as I know the church is not abandoned at all. They have a gift shop and there was an event there the day I went.

If you mean the old original Mission San Rafael, its ruins were completely torn down in 1870. Currently, there are two churches on site. The Church of San Raphael was constructed in 1919. Next to it is a smaller 'Old' Mission San Rafael. It was constructed in 1949. Unfortunately, no records or drawings of the original 'Old' Mission existed, so the current reconstructed church building is not a replica.
Founded in 1817, Mission San Rafael was built as a hospital sub-mission to Mission San Francisco. A quadrangle structure was never built here, basically being a simple hospital, a few storehouses, and a church for the Franciscan Fathers in charge. But in 1822, the Mission received full mission status. At this point, Father Omoros was placed in charge as the Mission began to develop orchards. Mission San Rafael was best known for its pear production. After the Mission received full-mission status, it quickly needed to become self-supporting and profitable. Besides its large pear and fig orchards, it had large vineyards of grapes for wine. It grew wheat, beans and corn. In 1828, the Mission also reported having livestock containing 5,508 animals, including thousands of sheep and cattle plus hundreds of horses. As Mission San Rafael developed its crops and ranching, it also became known for leather-working (harnesses and sandals) and carpentry as it developed shipbuilding.
All the priests along with the Bishop of the Diocese of San Francisco are in prayer and fasting in reparation for the sins of the clergy. I believe this is the third day.
There were no natural disasters that occurred at Mission San Rafael Archangel during its 17 years.
Founded in 1817 as a sub-mission to Mission San Francisco de Asis, it was originally built only to be a hospital. The structure was never was built in the typical quadrangle shape. For two years under Father Gil, it remained a hospital. In 1819, Father Aromos was placed in charge. Expanding the Mission with so many converts from the local Miwok Native Americans, Mission San Rafael received full mission status in 1822. During his time, Father Aromos also expanded the businesses of the Mission to include orchards (known for pear trees), wheat, beans and grapes. He raised cattle, sheep and horses. Men's jobs of farming and ranching expanded to include blacksmithing, harness-making and sandle-making. Carpentry was also important here as it was the only CA mission that did boat-building. As with all the other CA missions, women's jobs would have included tending to the mission's gardens, washing, cleaning, carding wool and weaving. Children would have helped in these jobs as well.
As for all the California missions, the religion promoted.was Roman Catholocism (Roman Catholic). The order of the church was the Franciscan order.
Old Mission San Rafael was originally built as a sub-mission and hospital to Mission San Francisco. It had a better climate and its location was considered more conducive to "healing." The native tribe (converted neophytes) that lived at Mission San Francisco were the Ohlone.

According to published materials, this mission acted as a mission for only 17 years (1817 - 1834). No effort was ever made to build a full complex and the few buildings were badly damaged in an attack led by some Native Americans in 1829. The original mission buildings were razed in 1870, with the only remaining original item left being a lone pear tree. In 1949, a replica of the original chapel was built on the property to the right of the main church, built in 1919 on the site of the original mission chapel.
Mission San Rafael was the only mission along the Camino Real that did not have a quadrangle. It was built to be a hospital for Mission San Francisco and reportedly only had a small two-story adobe structure and living quarters.
It is still a functioning church with an active parish! It is beautiful! There are several structures beside the church that can be visited, like a gift shop/interpretative center...
