The Hays House in Historic Council Grove, KS Update 2022 So… We stopped by the Hays House tonight to enjoy our Anniversary dinner. The service was good. The drink we had was good. The rack of ribs special ($23.95) I ordered was tasty. Word of advice though, pass on the Shrimp Scampi ($17.95). It’s a recent addition to the menu. The plate presentation was unappetizing with the shrimp floating on top of some watery rice and WAY too much raw garlic. I tried one of the shrimp and it was tasteless (like frozen shrimp that had been steamed up). We inquired if this was how it was supposed to be and after the server asked the chef about it, all we got was a “he said that’s the dish” and our check. I have to tell you we love garlic and we love shrimp. We’ve eaten scampi in higher end restaurants and dives. This shrimp scampi wasn’t good. We didn’t bother to even take it home. So, if you find yourself in the Council Grove area make The Historic Hays House your destination date. Just be sure to order the ribs… and not the shrimp!

Ate here. A little disappointed to say the least. Service was good. Fried Mushrooms were probably the best I ever had in any restaurant. And the salad was good. But the main course, Chicken Fired Steak, was not good. The mash potatoes and corn were also not good. The gravy also "No taste." I had not eaten here before, and again was very disappointed. Was just passing through and decided to give it a try. May return because it may just have been a bad night for the cook, but if I do it will be in a long long time. And might not ever return. Really wanted to be impressed, but left not impressed. And with the price, it really all should be much better. But do not allow my review to sway you. As stated before, the fried mushrooms were very impressive.

They have a nice "old west" decor. Our group had a variety of dishes, with our 5 year old trying mac and cheese myself having the tenderloin and another trying the bison burger. All of our choices were tasty and nicely prepared. Our server was polite and attentive. Most of the menu choices were along the lines of steaks and burgers.

This was our first time here. Inside a great historic area, was Hays House. It was busy this lunch hour. We had to wait 20 minutes. We were seated beside a rustic fireplace. The service was friendly and quick. I had a Wabaunsy Wrangler pulled pork sandwich. Very good! I've never had this combo before! Desserts are great and also massive! Plenty to share. Afterwards we toured to house and cellar. There's big rooms available for parties.

Child friendly? They don't have a playground or anything like that. They have highchairs. Best fried chicken in Kansas.
11am to 3pm I believe
