Please read the article the Sonoma Index Tribune did on the horrifying and inhumane treatment of chickens that were recently rescued from this store. This mutilation was done by a staff member which the store attempted to cover up after a concerned customer asked about the severely emaciated hens. They shouldn't be allowed to sell live chicks/animals anymore. I urge people to spread the news and join me in boycotting so that something like this never happens again. "Charlie’s Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary rescued 23 hens from Farmyard Feed and Country Store after a customer found the animals had been severely “debeaked,” leaving the hens “extremely emaciated” with “little or no upper beak.” The practice uses a hot blade to knife off and remove the top beak of a chick, according to Charlie’s Acres founder Tracy Vogt, and even certified humane egg producers use this practice. The debeaking of these 23 hens was so severe in this case, however, the hens were unable to eat solid food. Many of the hens now have little to no upper beak, some don’t have nasal passages at all and their tongues are constantly exposed, leaving the fowls with a heightened risk of bacterial infection and health issues, Axon said. When Trask expressed concern for the health of the birds, staff members attempted to assuage her worries. When that didn’t work, staff moved the birds behind a locked door in the back of the store, Trask told Axon. Through her inquiries with the feed store, Trask learned a staff member of the store had performed the debeaking, according to Axon. Yet instead of taking off three-eighths of an inch as is typical in the debeaking process, the employee loped off nearly the entire beak of some hens. This was incomprehensible to Axon because the chicks were slated to be backyard chickens she said, which is at odds with the purpose of debeaking. Debeaking is often used to prevent birds from pecking at each other or themselves in cramped cages. Axon opposes debeaking in all its forms, but said this incident was particularly cruel."
