Overall it was really nice hiking and was nice to see the "enchanted steps" and the industrial ruins. However the markers for trails were mostly non-existent. Their map (DCNR) was horrendous to follow as it doesn't match up with actual trails or the few markers i was able to find.

The good: Lots of trails. We parked at Boston Ball Field, walked the GAP trail to the hollow and walked pretty much every main trail there. My Garmin watch logged ~10 miles. Didn't see a single other person until we were walking out. Very secluded. The bad: Trails aren't well marked and there are a million little off shoot trails to confuse you. There's also not a whole lot of good "sights"along the trails. It's a lot of wooded walking. The stream was barely a trickle which resulted in a lackluster waterfall. Overall, I enjoyed the hike and would do it again. It's a nice way to escape the city and it feels remote once you're in the hollow, sometimes even a little creepy which I liked. If you have a trail app like AllTrails on your phone it is incredibly helpful to make use of the GPS mapping feature so you can make sure you haven't strayed from the main trails. It was a good way to spend a Saturday morning, but if you're looking to be wowed by the beauty of nature (streams, waterfalls, cool sights, etc...) you might leave disappointed. If you're looking to get out, avoid crowds, and enjoy feeling secluded and surrounded by nature, this should hit the spot.

Beautiful area for hikers of all levels! It is eerily quiet. I'm talking I didnt hear a single bird the entire time I was out there, but it was so insanely cool at the same time. We only got to do the left half of the map, so we are definitely going back to do the other half!!! Tip: if you go post rainy weather, wear clothes you don't care about, you will get mud on you!

Lots of great trails and places to explore. Trails are well blazed and the map is helpful. We like to park at Boston Bridge park and walk on the a Great Allegheny Passage trail to the the entrance where the Industrial Ruins is close by. We’ve also parked near Catfish Pond and enjoyed the trails there. My dogs love it and we haven’t found any parts that are too steep though there are definitely some challenging areas. My dogs also love lots of spots to cool off and drink water from Dead Man’s Run.

No, it is free!
Yes, there is a river that runs near dead man hollow. I often see people fishing near the Boston bridge. There is a sand bar that goes out into the river and is convenient
Yes. Its open 24 hours
There a hardware store called rc Walters that sells bait. The fishing ain't that great near the Boston bridge. But that's just from my experience.
Yes, although the signs say no, i called allegheny land trust and they said yes they allow it
Owned by Allegheny land trust open to the public no charge
Natural state? LOL The place is a slag dump! Most of Liberty Borough is built on slag. In the 50's 60's, the valleys were filled in and the stream was dammed to make the pond that's there now. It used to be called The Catfish Pond and many a misspent youth was spent there. The "nature" trails that are there now were carved by dirt bikes and keggers. One dry summer when the water was low, the roof of a stolen car became visible in the pond. Later that day 9 or more vehicles were pulled from the "pristine" waters. As the name suggests, the Catfish Pond only yielded trash fish. The real challenge were the plentiful carp. The other challenge was plinking the empty bottles that littered the surface with a bb gun to sink them.
