Kind, pleasant and knowledgeable staff. Will find you what you need and what you didn't know you need. A key asset to the community and well worth an out of town membership.

Based on a limited first visit to print a page off the internet. Large impressive clean attractive facility with generous hours and friendly, helpful staff.

Very modern library with space for all kinds of functions. A gallery, a projection presentation room, a board meeting room, etc. This institution gives New Hampshire a good name.

Disgraceful. An insult to the very idea of a library. Abysmal selection of "books" A library is a well, one where you drop the bucket deep to drink of the waters of knowledge, thought, ideas. Unfortunately, this library reeks of partisanship. A clearly fascist edifice where the only ideas found inside are parroted words that fit a specific person or persons worldview or mindset. You will find nothing to challenge or change you, only regurgitated drivel to quell thought. The saddest thing? You will find livelier more colorful or upbeat orthodontist offices than this sterile whitewashed clinic. What makes me weep is children are not welcome in the Portsmouth library. There is no comfortable happy children's area, merely a tepid uninteresting young adults section. As if the Portsmouth library demigods considered children to be an annoying afterthought, not the beating lifeline to its very future survival. Shame on Portsmouth that claims to be so wise and forward thinking yet has a third rate hovel worse than the Khmer Rouge.

We have a large parking lot. However, we do share it with the Recreation Department for the Connie Bean Center and Leary Field, so if you're coming for an event, we suggest arriving 15 minutes early just in case.
Hi James, if you don't have your own charger we have chargers for Apple and Android devices available at the circulation desk. We just ask that you leave an ID with us while you use them. Outlets are available throughout the library. For more information feel free to call us at 603-427-1540.
Yes, we have public wifi which you can access by connecting to "Public_Library" and then accept the terms and conditions of use through your web browser. (Similar to how you would access wifi at a Starbucks.) Wifi is available throughout the building and can usually reach devices outside on the library grounds as well. For more information call 603-427-150.
Hi Frank! We have computer classes during the year - starting again in September - and do offer one on computer basics. But a better option for you might be our Device Help service. You can meet with library staff one-on-one for twenty minutes (and you can make additional appointments if necessary). It's open to everyone - not just Portsmouth Public Library members! If you're interested, call our Reference Desk at 603-766-1720 to make an appointment.
Yes we do! Word and the rest of the Office suite. On PCs and laptops.
We do indeed Michael, throughout the building, as well as Wifi printing if you need it. Alas, it will reach only around the library, not across the street. Sorry! I have seen Xfinity signals around there in the past, if that helps.
Jan, we're so sorry you were having difficulty!! We have two separate services that offer ebooks - Hoopla and Overdrive(Libby). Both can be used on the computer or on a mobile device. As long as you have a library card and your account is current, it should only take a minute or two to download a book. We want to help!! Feel free to call us at 766-1740 next time you're experiencing difficulty and we can assist you.
We book three Study Rooms for this exact purpose! They can be reserved for up to two hours at a time, up to two weeks in advance. Just cally 766-1720 or visit the Reference desk upstairs to reserve one.
Our current nonresident card is $90 for a full year, $50 for a half year, with a small senior discount for those over 65. This reflects the local taxes which support the library.
We are open 1 PM - 5 PM on Sundays during the Fall, Winter and Spring. We are closed on Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
