Yesterday my mother passed away at Sunrise in Huntington Beach exactly 4 years 11 months from the day she first started living there. I can not overstate what a positive experience Mom and my family had there. My mother had early Alzheimer's when she first entered the dementia unit. After one week she told me that she loved her new home and to the very end kept saying how much she loved her home and friends. After two years she was moved into the locked advanced dementia unit and I found that the staff gave Mom care way above what my family could provide. Friends and family that visited her said the facility and staff were first rate and complimented me for having such good care given to her. On a five star rating service Sunrise would have a 5+ rating from me. I came in during different hours of the day and night and found a safe and attended environment every time. Staff members consulted me when ever they had a question or concern. I could not have asked for better care for mom. Carl Glasgow

We had a bad experience when we tried to have my husband's mother admitted to this facility. They have three areas for different levels of care, so these comments really only apply to their locked Alzheimer's unit called memory care. Unfortunately my mother in law is a cantankerous old lady, she is 92 and has dementia and paranoia. She does not always understand what the nursing aides want her to do. Shortly after admission she threw a cup and saucer, and tried to escape from the locked unit. She later told us she thought the aides were trying to steal her clothes They were obviously shocked, and requested she be removed immediately! She was hospitalized and started on medication for the paranoia, and is doing well. She is currently in a different nursing home. But we wasted a great deal of time and money because we had no way of knowing this facility was completely unable to handle any bad behavior from a dementia patient. Even though my mother in law is grouchy and difficult at 92, with dementia and cardiac problems, she is not actually strong enough to hurt anyone. She is frail 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 110, and uses a walker. Unfortunately aggression is common in dementia, if you are running a dementia or Alzheimer's unit, How can you not be prepared for a common behavior of that population? Physically this is a attractive facility, and it is the closest unit to our home. But I feel other families should be warned, they will not keep a difficult patient.
