My name is Uncle David and I live in NYC. I feed birds from my 3rd floor apartment fire escape and my favorite place to buy high quality bird seed is Wild Birds Unlimited in Paramus, NJ. Recently, my niece (who I love more than life itself) in Orange County, CA. took an interest in feeding birds. Unfortunately, she hasn't had a good track record. She accidentally killed her hamster and recently drowned a baby starling that fell out of its nest by giving the poor thing a whole syringe full of water. ..."but Uncle David, it kept begging for more!" My darling niece is learning as she goes, as we all do. It's up to Uncle David to encourage my niece's love of animals and so I bought her a beautiful bird feeder to hang up in her backyard but how was I going to send her bird seed? Wild Birds Unlimited in NJ would've charged me $37 to send bird seed to California which is too expensive and the carbon footprint is decidedly not green at all. I researched and found another Wild Birds Unlimited in Huntington Beach, CA. and I called 15 minutes before closing time. The nicest person picked up the phone and he greeted me warmly. His name is Jonathan and he is owner of the Huntington Beach Wild Birds Unlimited store. I didn't want to be any trouble as I know how tired people are at the end of a day but Jonathan seemed to have all the time in the world. He laughed with me when I told him of my niece's horrific tragedy and he assured me that he would do his part in helping my niece along with her new journey into the world of birds. I then placed my order for a bag of bird seed over the phone. What happened next is the crux of this fairy tale. I asked Jonathan when he expected the seed to arrive. He said, "Tonight." What? I couldn't believe my ears. How was this possible? Jonathan said when he finished work he would simply drop the bag of bird seed off at my niece's house. It was just one bag of bird seed I ordered and it wasn't necessary. He told me it wasn't a problem at all. I mean, talk about disbelief and amazement? Wow! How could someone I never met before be this generous and giving? Sure enough, two hours later, Jonathan texted me this photo. Not only did Jonathan deliver the bag of bird seed to the front porch of the house but he gifted the seed in a beautiful bag with a nice note for my niece! Talk about going above and beyond! I've never experienced this before in my life. Too many people complain about how awful things are but very few people sing the praises of people who are good and caring. I'm doing that here. I'm singing the praises of Jonathan at Wild Birds Unlimited in Huntington Beach, CA. You see, there really is a Santa Claus. Thank you, Jonathan!

How do I keep squirrels away from my bird feeder?

Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021
Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021

Try offering them their own feeding station with their favorite foods like corn or nuts. Use a squirrel-proof bird feeder, like the Eliminator. Place a baffle on your feeder pole. Use dome baffles above bird feeders. Try an OnGuard™ wire mesh cage around your existing feeders to keep squirrels from reaching the food. Fill your bird feeders with safflower seeds, many songbirds will eat safflower, but squirrels typically won't.

How do I stop birds from hitting my window?

Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021

Here are a few options: Set up a window feeder, it will keep the birds safe from striking the window and provide close views of them feeding. If your feeding station is in the direct vicinity of a window, move it to within three feet of the window. Install window screens. Decals and stained-glass decorations are moderately successful. Hanging vertical exterior tape stripes across the window at 4 inches (10 cm) intervals.

I put out a new feeder and the birds are not eating from it, when will they find it?

Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021
Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021

After installing a new feeder it can take a day or a number of weeks before the birds will readily take to it even if it replaces an existing feeder. Patience is key when birds are getting used to a new feeder. Birds generally find their food by sight. Placing your feeder where it will be visible to them should decrease the time it takes for birds to start feeding. Sprinkling some food on the ground or on top of the feeder can help, too.

I found a baby bird, what should I do?

Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021
Wild Birds Unlimited | Aug 22, 2021

The best thing to do if you find a baby bird is to leave it alone. If the bird appears as though it has fallen from a nest, an attempt to locate the nest can be made, and the bird can be carefully returned. If the bird has feathers, it may be a fledged bird and a parent bird is probably close by. It is best to watch the bird from a distance to see if a parent returns after an hour or so before determining that the bird needs human help.

Do you take hummingbirds that have fallen out of the nest?

Call a local vet, they should have contact numbers for wildlife folks....or place, very carefully, back into the nest, if possible. Usually, the parents won't care; been my experience....
