I've worked there several times since they first started construction to well after completion. It's one of the biggest taxpayer scams of the century. I was told the cost was around 1.2 billon dollars to supply power for 70,000 homes. Hands down one of the worst run projects that I've ever been on

It is not as clean as you think. Toxic oil With Benzene leaks all over you can smell it from the highway. Soaks into the ground. Nox from leaking salt tanks. Mirrors dont heat up water they heat up oil which heat transfers in a steam generation process. Dont produce enough megawatts for the cost. And charge you more on ur bill. Takes up too much space 2000 acres. And for all the clean energy people. Nothing is clean.

I work there a lot and I really don't think they give tours there is quite a few hazards involved in the process that would be dangerous without proper training..

How does it work

The large reflecting mirrors that you see when driving by are concentrating the solar energy, and generating heat. This heat eventually boils water, which produces steam; the expansion of the steam forces the fan blades of a turbine to rotate. At the center of the turbine, spinning magnets generate an electric current. At this power plant, the heat from the sun is actually used to melt salt into a molten liquid first. This pool of molten salt acts like a giant battery, storing the energy so it can be dispatched at any time, day or night.
