Prepare to walk! Traffic heading towards Griffith Observatory can be heavy especially in the afternoon on any given day. There are a couple options to park and walk up or if you’re ambitious, slowly make your way via car to the top. The views are incredible however and totally worth the journey. Entry is free although there are some pay to view exhibits we did not check out. I would love to come back after sunset to see if this is a good place to see stars!

We did not spend much time inside the Observatory exhibition area. Instead, we wondered around the open spaces to see some great views of LA. There were a lot of people walking around but it was still easy to just stop and relax a little. Unless you really like to walk or plan on spending a good amount of time there, I highly recommend just parking near the Observatory itself. There were many parking spots open during our weekend visit and it costs $10/hour.

This is one of my favorite places to go to in Los Angeles.
The Good:
—The views on all sides are absolutely breathtaking!
—You can see the Hollywood Sign on the right side up on Mt. Lee.
—You can park for free on West Observatory Road, West Canyon Road, and the upper parking lot by the Observatory on Monday through Friday from opening until 12:00 P.M. and on Saturday and Sunday from opening until 9:00 A.M.
—There are a lot of trails near there, and there are many ways to get a great workout.
The Bad
—Parking is $10.00 per hour in the upper parking lot and on roads near the Observatory anytime Monday to Friday after 12:00 P.M. and on Saturday and Sunday after 9:00 A.M.
—Currently, the buildings are only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

What can you say, the GO is iconic on a number of levels. It's much larger than I expected and the displays are very interesting. My wife and sons saw one of the planetarium shows and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I stayed out on the upper terrace enjoying the unbelievable night view of the city and surrounding area. It'd be nice if the parking system was better but I guess you can only stuff a finite number of cars on a mountaintop. Recommended!
It like a movie theater if you go early ull get the best seats and if you want just to tour you can come when you want (open day Monday is always closed) you can buy a ticket to watch the solar system or a free movie about the history of griffen Park were a tube meteoroids are at and at night saturday (sometime) they will turn on the the telescope to see stern and the moon ( stern is out normally at early January or March) and the moon is always out at the end or begging of the month)
There is free parking towards the bottom of the hill - however, it's a fairly long hike, so only to be done if you're able to walk a mile or two up hill. Otherwise, there is closer parking (the earlier you get there on busy days, the further up hill you'll be able to park) - that's charged at $4 an hour. One thing to note - you *don't* need to leave your receipt on the dashboard when you pay. Also, the machines all take card!
Don't go after 10pm. I was under the impression there'd still be some activity afterwards and tried walking past the closed road signs to take some night shots. It was completely dead and about 3/4 of a mile up I was surrounded by a pack of coyotes. Had to use mace to run them off. It looks lit up and potentially active still but it most definitely is not.
Yes it is. It is also featured in many other games like command and conquer, wasteland 2, mafia 2 and the crew, but also movies and series like terminator, back to the future 1,2, transformers, la la land, star trek voyager etc.
You pay nothing. Just drive yourself to the observatory point. Make sure to carry a good camera as the view is very ecstatic, Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood sign, sun setting, and many more others. At times parking can be a challenge depending on the number of people visiting the place but never worry about it. You'll always find a spot. Hope you'll enjoy when you decide to visit!
Cheers!
Weekday (Friday) Hours
Open 12:00 noon – 10:00 p.m.
Weekend (Saturday – Sunday) Hours
Open 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Closed Monday – Thursday
Parking is enforced every day of the year, Monday-Friday 12pm—10pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am—10pm. Parking fees increase over peak season/holidays. If there is no show at The Greek Theatre you may park for free in that parking lot and ride the DASH Observatory up the hill for .
Yes, if the parking by the observatory is not full and the security staff allow access, you may park there and enjoy the views. otherwise you may park down the hill, along the road and walk up to the observatory. The building is still closed due to COVID-19.
Okay that's two cheers but my reason for posting was to ask if the reason it was the only object visible last night -after a week of ash and smoke obscured skies, may have been related to it being the only red object!?
Is it still possible to park even though the observatory itself is closed?

I'm waiting for Comet to cross LA near LaCienega with my family. Has Neowise crossed LA?
Rachel Overby | Aug 20, 2020
Angie Gil | Aug 20, 2020
I know there we need to go on high places like Griffith Observatory but it needs to be dark to see it, and you need to use small telescopes. but I'm sorry I don't know if the comet already passed😔😊❤
I can care less about the inside part, will the outside parts around it be open to the public you know the view?
Eddie Gates | Aug 20, 2020
T AA | Aug 20, 2020
They are open on the outside, but you must bring a mask and they require social distancing. Gorgeous view at dusk and night. I think the road closes at 10pm. Have fun!!
Parking is not along the mountain and at the top. If there is no even you can park at the Greek Theater and take the shuttle up the mountain. Shuttle is $.50 a person.
Going for the first time with a group of Girl Scouts this wknd. Was told the telescopes set up will show the same things at 2 pm as when it’s dark, so just wondering how long you think we’ll be there? And I saw there was no picnicking? Food options?
T B | Aug 21, 2019
Giséle Palacios | Aug 21, 2019
I would say about 3 hours for a group, maybe less. It is correct, there are not food options so try to plan your time, there is a cafeteria about 10 minutes down the way but I don't know how good it is. I hope this helps.
All three floors of exhibits are free of charge explore, thanks to the taxpaying citizens of Los Angeles. There are also free shows in the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater every hour on the hour. The only thing they charge for are the planetarium shows, which are worth the ticket because it looks like you're flying through space. $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, $3 for children aged 5-12.
Depends on what you want to see. The place is free! You can make a full visit. You only pay if you want to use the planetarium. I would not know the price.
Yes. Whenever the building is open, visitors age 12 and over still must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter. Masks are still required inside. Both requirements remain in place because the Observatory is a City-operated facility. https://griffithobservatory.org/visit/getting-here/
From the observatory’s website:
“Whenever the building is open, visitors age 12 and over still must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter. Masks are still required inside. Both requirements remain in place because the Observatory is a City-operated facility.”
So an unvaccinated 11 year old is ok as long as they wear a mask.
Can you still visit right outside of the observatory when the inside is closed?
Edward | Jun 21, 2022
Jay Herron | Jun 21, 2022
Yes you can. Until the Observatory opens you can wander around as you please. They set up a barrier right outside of the actual Observatory when its open. To get past the barrier, you must provide proof of vaccination and a photo ID. Otherwise, you are free to roam outside the barrier with no problem.
Balakumaran Balasubramaniam (Ketheesh) | Jun 21, 2022
if you've got a digital copy of your vaccination records make sure you have a copy available offline as the connection up there can be spotty.
Vaccination records are checked before entering the building and masks are provided and required to be worn when walking around inside as well as watching any planetarium shows. Nothing is required for the lawn or hiking around the area.
There are a lot of fascinating things to see inside the observatory that can be enjoyed in any weather. That said, my personal favorite part of the observatory is the amazing views of the city from the upstairs decks and that could be affected if the weather is bad. Also, depending on how the parking situation is when you go, a long walk from your car could be uncomfortable in bad weather.
When I went 4/15/2022 you either had to show proof of vaccination completed 2 weeks earlier, or, a negative COVID test done in a professional setting. A home test was not accepted.
Yes the outside part is constantly open. No matter if the observatory is closed you can hike anywhere. But you have to pay ridiculous prices for parking or you got to hike up if you want free parking.
Where does one park if it is crowded at the top? Any suggestions
J M | Aug 20, 2021

Either along road to the top with a fee or at the bottom for free and hike to the top
Is the parking lot or shuttle in operation today? I don't care about going in the observatory, just wanna go up there for the views
David Y. | Aug 20, 2021

The Observatory has been closed so not sure you would even have access.
There's parking down at street level so you can take a short(20min) hike up or you can also drive up and find paeking closer to observation area.
Due to the pandemic, the building itself is closed. However, you can hike up to it and enjoy the terrace and the surrounding area's which are quite nice. The views are phenomenal!
closed, checked and only grounds keeper/security up there. Building is closed but area is open if you still want to look around/hike paths. Be weary and use mosquito repellant.
It shouldn't be a problem. As per their website you can do photo shoots outside (not inside) as long as it doesn't block any sidewalks or pathways or interfere with other visitors' access.
http://www.griffithobservatory.org/visiting/helpfulguidelines.html#photography
Yes you can buddy. Take your own car. You might have to park far away and walk. I dont know if its worth the effort though. Just go on a weekday and enjoy. Why make it complicated. The observatory is free anyway.
I would recommend 90 minutes before sunset so you can get a parking spot at the top parking lot. Sunset there is very impressive, and watching the lights of LA start coming on after sunset is fabulous.
We took the bus, red line I believe. Parking was a nightmare the night we went. The bus was 50 cents. Parking was $10 an hour, if you could find a spot.
The truth is I don't have much knowledge of what I know about this place, how little I know what in astral phenomena created what in this place has a telescope to look at it more but what happens in it
Everyday, if you arrive at the greek teather parking before 4 PM. That parking is free only if the aren't events at the greek theather in that day, so check the theather website.
If you park in the Greek Theater lot you can take the shuttle up the mountain 50 cents one way. Otherwise parking costs at least $5 dollars and you might have to walk a good distance up hill.
Also the planetarium show has a ticket which is also nominal (under $10 per person) & i would recommend watching it esp if you have kids...one of the best planetarium shows i've ever watched!
It really varies depending on the show, but to most popular are 30 minutes. However, they have much longer show that approach the length of full movie. They have some event called "Sunset Walk" which scheduled to be a 1 hour long.
To get more info you may visit www.griffithobservatory.org/programs/programs.html

What is the cost of entry and make use of what is permissible
Antonio Medina | Aug 21, 2019
Austin Adams | Aug 21, 2019
there is no cost to enter or park. If you want to take the bus to the top of the hill you need to bring 50 cents per ride per person. most events are free.
Do you have to pay entrance to the park? How much is admission? And the parking for vehicles is per hour or how much does it cost?
Daniel Nuñez | Aug 21, 2019
Austin Adams | Aug 21, 2019
It is free to enter and free to park. If you don't want to walk up the mountain, take the bus to the top, called the Dash. The bus costs 50 cents per person to ride
Yes. While it is an observatory, and the entire inside is about looking at planets and stars, the views are spectacular. From the observatory, you can see the Hollywood sign at a good distance, mountains, the ocean, as well as entire city views of LA and Santa Monica. The observatory itself is atop a mountain, so you also get nature in the trip.
I plan to go up here for New Year's Eve and wait until 12am so I can watch the fireworks from the top of the Griffith Observatory... Can I be outside at the top of the Griffith Observatory at midnight?
Arty Kenny | Aug 21, 2019
Titus Wiebe | Aug 21, 2019
Absolutely. The front lawn as well as the top of the building has an excellent view of the city and the surrounding country side. Happy New Year!
Its up to you...but I would be there atleast 1 hour to see inside and out and absorb the scenery. Also at night the view its really beautiful...I went at night and was well worth it.
It is free to enter the museum itself, the three floors of exhibits and the documentary about the museum. The only thing that costs money are the shows in the planetarium, projected on the main dome where you feel like you are flying in space. Worth the $ 7 entry fee
Unfortunately the rangers close it at night :( after 10PM is marked very clearly. However its not clear if only vehicle access is restricted. By parking after the greek theater close to the bird refuge parking lot, it only takes minutes to walk up to the top.
You can not bring your own telescope unless you're with LAAS on a star party night. However, there are Observatory telescopes on the sidewalk every clear night it's open.
Buenas tardes Samantha. Do you mean if it's suitable for kids? Indeed. They'll fall in love with the view. The place rocks either way but I recommend you to go during daylight and at night as well so you enjoy both views. There's a small kind of museum in there too.
Not free, Pay Stations - July to September 3 parking is $8/hr. M-F noon-10pm. After Sept 3, parking is $6/hr. Or you can hike up there for free!
Can we still enjoy mars tomorrow at Griffith?
kenneth Nelson | Aug 21, 2018
Nancy Elias | Aug 21, 2018
Yes!
Is the parking free for today's Mars viewing event?
Red Piper | Aug 21, 2018
Carlos Figueroa | Aug 21, 2018
As far as I'm concerned it will be free. Be mindful that the parking is scarce compared to the amount of visitors they received. Most of people leave their cars downtown and walk the whole way to the Observatory.
Can you prepay the parking? I mean, can you park there two hours before paying hours, pay till afternoon, and go hiking?
Almudena Hellín | Aug 21, 2018
Nancy Elias | Aug 21, 2018
Yes. Be sure you pay for enough hours. You will be fined.
Will there be special programs for viewing the Lunar Eclipse on July 27 ?
Sylvia St. James Synthesismusic | Aug 21, 2018

No special viewings. Unfortunately, the Lunar eclipse is only visible from Asia, Europe, Africa, South America and Australia, on July 27. However, the Observatory and Telescope are open normal hours, that day.
Im planing to around 5/6pm is that still a good time to go?
Berenice Miranda | Aug 21, 2018

5 or 6 PM is good but may be you have hard time because traffic. Totally after 6 is better becuase when getting liitle bit darker you have better view for Photography.
Hello Rupa Sridhar. rises around 2:15 a.m. local daylight time in early April, and around 12:15 a.m. at month's end. Three hours later it is shining more than 20 degrees up in the southeast – providing an eerily beautiful end for a late-night Griffith telescopic observing session.
Go early, earlier the better. No reservation to drive up and look around or go inside just to look around. However you do need tickets for the shows inside. One of the theaters inside was recently named the Leonard Nimoy theater, very cool.
Yes the parking is paid, it's $5 per hour on the side of the road that leads to the observatory. But know that finding parking is still difficult although it is expensive. If you are lucky, there is a spot on the other side of the mountain and it's kinda off the road that's free. When I visited 2 years back they didn't have paid parking but now they do.
DASH Observatory public bus service from the Vermont/Sunset Metro Red Line station to the Observatory service operates during the following times:
Monday – Friday12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m.
Saturday – Sunday10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
I'm handicapped is there handicapped parking and alot of walking? Can my grandson and I see a show?
Polly Bautista | Aug 21, 2018
Sohrab Tanavoli | Aug 21, 2018
I believe so but there is not a lot of parking available in the lot itself and if you are late, you have park street parking driving up the hiss which may be a problem for you.I suggest going there early.
You can also check the shuttle pick up locations in Hollywood and find free parking around there. The shuttle drops and picks up right in front. All that info is on the website.
The parking lot at and around the observatory cost $4 hr. Best bet is to park for free down the hill near the Greek Theater and then take the shuttle bus across the street for 50¢ round trip.
Fantastic view! You wont be disappointed! Views of LA & Hollywood sign. Its very popular though & i wasn't able to park in top car park, had to park along the side of the road and walk the rest of the way..
Yes you can stay but the museum is close at 10:00 and you can stay for the view like @ 11:00pm-4:00am it says it closed till sun set till sun rise but I never got stop and if you will go on a hike don't hike at night because there's a P22(a Bob cat) if you every confront him make a lot of noise an make your self look big
That is very interesting place and have lot about our earth and sky to know and fun place Related to famous movies and move stars.really good to see nature.
There is a shuttle bus that goes from the end of Hollywood Blvd if that's any help to you, it's probably always going to be busy roads up and down + hiking up is hot and sweaty.
You can go for a really nice hike if you're up to ,the weather is super nice and you don't really feel it just make sure you do it during the day at night is very dark and is almost impossible
Yes, there is a paid parking right next to the observatory, but it is awmost full. There is free parking on the road up to rhe observatory, but one has to wall a bit rhen, somerime for up to 10 minutes . Have a comfortable shoes😉❗Enjoy your trip. Bu the way one can hike to it on a trail from the botom of Griffith park if you park near Los Feliz blvd. It takes 30-45mim.
