Would give 0 stars if possible. Worse service ever, the permit inspectors and reviewers will completely make it difficult for you to pull a simple permit, you can feel the tone and the way the talk to you, Disrespectful and rude! Sarasota county you should be ashamed

The Building & Zoning Department For Sarasota County Is Always Sooooo Responsive When I Need Their Help. Working in the Swimming Pool Industry, I sometimes need their assistance with setbacks and easements and other situations of that matter. Every time I email or call them, they are right on the spot with an answer and assistance. I greatly appreciate their customer service because it allows me to serve my customers, in our community, better. thanks Sarasota County Building & Zoning!!! Keep It Up!!!!!

The people in this office are incredibly helpful and made the entire process easier than I thought it would be. I came from a place where you could tear your house down and build another in place without anyone noticing (or caring). So being new to Sarasota, I heard nothing but horror stories about fees and hassles and violations. But the truth is, as long as your plans are right and your work is to code, the process is a breeze. Everyone I’ve worked with from the people at the counter to the plans examiners and the inspectors have been great. Most of the complaints you’ll hear about permits in Sarasota likely come from people trying to cheat the system and sneak things through. You can’t do that here — and you shouldn’t. This is a place where weather is a real threat. There’s many reasons why they employ people to make sure your work is done properly. Don’t cheat, don’t try to sneak anything by them, and don’t lie about anything. The only real drawback is the wait. Just be patient and you’ll be golden.

The Sarasota County Building Dept has made many customer service enhancements over the last several years that have totally changed the permitting experience for our company. Online permitting, Phone Apps, Wait times, Web Site upgrades, Attitudes of the inspectors, Helpfulness of the office staff, Access to the staff and Permit turn-around time... just to name a few. I am honestly shocked there aren't more positive reviews. We have pulled permits in several other municipalities, and the County's bldg dept. is by far the best. Keep up the good work!!!

Of course you can. You have all the power as the homeowner. Call the county, explain what you want to do and they will help you.

There should really be a handy hints rulebook for all this. Go to the property appraiser's website and run the address. If you don't see a city taxation line on the TRIM notice, it's county

My insurance co wants a wind mitigation report that costs over $125 to lower our insurance and all the homes built here are made under the latest regs. Why can't I get a report from someone, the county the builder ??? for my home for free.

Robert Carow | Aug 21, 2019
Jon Prettyman | Aug 21, 2019

No, you need to get it from a licensed home inspector, 125 is cheap, my neighbor paid 625 for one. The county is not licensed to make this report. If you house was built before 2000 it 50/50 if it meets the requirements.
