I visited Sender One to boulder while visiting Orange County. It’s an ok gym, I would be reluctant to get a membership here but great for a visit! Pros: — definitely catered to kids/new climbers. The kid area was really cute — Decently sized gym, variety of climbs Here’s some feedback I have: — They were renovating the bathrooms and had two all-gender restrooms open. They were kinda dirty, didn’t feel super clean. There was pools of water on the bathroom floor which felt kinda bad haha — The mats are kinda hard compared to other gyms. They don’t have much bounce and I didn’t feel comfortable climbing to the top of walls and falling from that height. My friend was saying that the actual padding thickness seemed thinner than his gym too. I’m used to sinking into a mat as I walk — def felt more stiff than that! — It’s extremely hot. I wish they had more fans. I’ve never felt hot climbing at other gyms but was legit sweating through my pants!! They had some small fans around the space but they were turned off. — I wish they specified two hand start vs one hand start. — I wish they put their climbs on KAYA so I can track >:)

I'm a climber of 7? years and a reluctant member of this gym... It's got tall walls, routes are set pretty frequently, there's a few cracks, and there's classes, fitness center, and training tools (campus board, hangboards, 2 moonboards and a kilter board). But it's clear that this gym prioritizes attracting new climbers over pushing existing climbers to get better. How so? 1) The grades are soft, the setting is boring especially on ropes. Yes, gyms are softer than outside, but Sender's grades are a whole number grade (maybe more) softer than other gyms. Even the cone, until you get to like... 11c/d, it's just a jug haul, albeit a steep one. 2) During peak Covid restrictions, members were restricted to one single 2-hour session a day, and long before members were allowed to climb for longer (2 hours is not enough!!!), non-members and new people (aka the $$$-makers) were returning to the gym. Meanwhile, other gyms like PG prioritized letting members climb for longer sessions first. I feel like this was a clear signal showing who and what Sender prioritizes. 3) Why are the training center's hours so restrictive? On top of that, if the kids (aka more $$$ for the gym) are training on the boards, then good luck getting any time on the boards during your reservations. 4) They're always churning through classes and clinics (which is great)... but they're misguided. There's "adult training club" and a plethora of classes for improving movement and technique.... This takes us back to #1 - why not just set better climbs that teach new people something? 5) Finally, a petty one... Why are you guys always promoting your new merch??? Yes you're a business, but you're not a clothing store. You're a gym. That said, I do enjoy climbing here and always have a fun session. The staff is nice! The climbers are nice! The facilities are nice! I do also wish the other locations weren't all the way in LA...

Had a great family visit at Sender One. It's nice that you don't have to be an expert to enjoy the visit. We brought our kids, one was celebrating a birthday. They really enjoyed it and parents are allowed to watch or if you pay for admission, join in the climbing. A one hour session is plenty if you don't climb regularly. It is a good exercise activity for the kids. They broke a sweat but still has a lot of fun. Adults must fasten safety ropes to all kids 13 and under. Having 3 kids, it was quite busy to attach and detach each child between climbs.

Do members get free rental shoes?

Not with the normal price (redacted). A 10 punch pass does not have rentals. I would highly recommend getting your own pair of shoes if you are getting a membership Edit: the addon for rentals for membership has been removed per new Sender One policy.

Sender One Climbing & Sender City - Santa Ana | Aug 20, 2019

Sender One has 3 areas of climbing: Bouldering, which is short wall climbing with no ropes; Top Rope and Sport, which requires belay certification; and Sender City, an interactive area with auto belays. Day passes can be purchased for Bouldering and Ropes, while Sender City is a separate 1-hour admission and reservations are highly recommended. Hope to see you soon!

Would sender one be a good fit for an 11 year old boy?

Sender One Climbing & Sender City - Santa Ana | Aug 20, 2019

Hello Pat, Sender One has two admissions, Sender City and Sender One Climbing. For an 11 year old boy who hasn't had any climbing experience, we might recommend Sender City - which can be a little more interactive and requires no prior knowledge from you as a parent. More info can be found at: https://www.senderoneclimbing.com/sna/sender-city/general-admission/ Thanks for writing in, Ryan Levi
