I went to this beginner self defense class a little unexpected of what was going to go on during the class and how I would feel have afterwards. It turned out that the class was amazing, our instructor Silvia was even more amazing as well as the group of women I was with in the duration of the class. We learned so much valuable information to use in every day life that keeps use aware and alert plus some techniques that could help in a more serious situation. Felt comfortable the whole time in all the exercises from the verbal to the physical portions. I would love to move onto the next class with Silvia, she made me feel completely comfortable the whole class. You can tell Silvia really loves what she does and I believe that really makes the class the reason why it’s so amazing. Thank you so much Silvia and Naga for such a great experience and amazing tools I get to use in my life now.

Our daughter attended summer camp last year, and she fell in love with Naga. She's been training since the fall, and often tells my husband and I that it feels like her second family. She has become more confident and assertive, has taken on leadership roles with younger students, and has learned so much about physical and mental strength and well-being. Our son joined Little Monkeys about a month or so after his sister started training, and he leaps out of bed every Saturday to get to the studio. He loves Silvia and Jeff, and as an educator myself, I'm impressed at how they handle a roomful of high energy kiddos! Naga has helped him channel his emotions productively and connect with a warm and loving community. We can't wait to see what the next year brings! Thank you!

Silvia, My daughter absolutely loved her 1st class. She came over to me 3 times and said "this is fun!" I also wanted to tell you that I think the way you teach this class is absolutely amazing. I don't often get to sit and watch anymore, but after a year (for anyone reading this review, we have another daughter who has been in this program for over a year) I'm still impressed! You're one of the most welcoming people I've ever met, (which has been passed down to all of the senior students and black belts - I'm super impressed by the teenage black belts in particular), and the way you can make new students feel at home, let the students have fun and express themselves, and then be able to silence that room with a single word is truly remarkable. For our daughters (and sons) to see women in leadership roles commanding that kind of respect and admiration is what's going to change the world. Sincerely, Kris Gillmore

We started here about a month ago and have been deeply impressed. The whole Naga team has been so welcoming and enthusiastic about our daughter joining. They manage to meet each student where they are, introduce appropriate challenges, and have fun at the same time. I can clearly see how much they care about empowering my daughter. I am so grateful to have found the Naga family and look forward to the adventure ahead.

Do you teach self-defense classes for children?

Silvia Smart | Aug 19, 2020
Naga - Martial Arts | Self Defense | Community | Aug 19, 2020

Yes! We have done the research and know that once a child has been assaulted, the likelihood of re-assault increases exponentially over the course of their lifetime. We know we can’t control everything that happens to our children, but we CAN give them tools to stay safer when we are not with them. Our classes are age-appropriate, safe and empowering. We use current research and best practices to provide the highest quality experience in town.

Naga - Martial Arts | Self Defense | Community | Aug 20, 2019

We do! We are known for having some of the best summer camps in town! We know that because parents bring their children back to us year after year after year! Summer is a time for fun, and camps are a great way for kids to dip their toes into new experiences. Not everyone wants to join us on a journey toward black belt, but stepping onto the training path for a week or two is a fantastic option! Open this door and your child will be welcomed into an exciting journey through the Indonesian jungle! They will make lots of new friends, have plenty of time to run and play outside under the trees, and importantly, they will learn essential elements of this holistic martial art, along with self-defense skills that last a lifetime. You want to know your child can trust themselves, set boundaries and speak up at school, on the playground, at sleepovers, other camps, and whenever and wherever the situation demands it.

We also offer pure self-defense classes, one off workshops for women and children during which we focus on awareness, prevention and action strategies. We offer corporate classes in self-defense, de-escalation and active shooter. We also have amazing summer camps for kids!

How do the ranks work?

Jennifer Qian | Aug 20, 2018
Naga - Martial Arts | Self Defense | Community | Aug 20, 2019

A student begins their training as a white belt, symbolizing purity and humility. In our art, students go on to earn colored sashes: gold, blue, green, and then brown. Black belt is a huge step in our art and once a student achieves this rank, it is likened to a new beginning. There are nine degrees of black belt in our art. Here is a look at the ranks in our art and what the training path looks like: (https://nagacommunity.com/about/the-training-path/)

What's the history of the art you teach and how did Naga come to be?

Jennifer Qian | Aug 20, 2018
Naga - Martial Arts | Self Defense | Community | Aug 20, 2019

At Naga, we train the art of Poekoelan (pu-ku-lan) Tjimindie (chi-min-dee) which is a traditional style from the islands of Indonesia. This art is a form of Penjat (or pencak) Silat, which is the overarching art of Indonesia - the national style. Poekoelan Tjimindie is based in self-defense, so from the beginning, the moves are incredibly effective. As you proceed through the ranks, you learn to fight from close range and on the ground. This is an animal style, which makes it fun for the kids and for grown-ups who are open minded and young at heart!
