Outside of hunting season, Short Mountain WMA is very much overlooked. But when the hunters are gone and the woods are quiet, Short Mountain provides a wonderful opportunity for hiking, birdwatching, enjoying nature. 8000 acres of mountain and valley, woodland and wetland. 4 stars because of lack of accessibility. Only one road in unless you can access from the surrounding private properties.

After hunting season is over the road into Short Mountain WMA is closed to vehicles. The roads are then large hiking trails.
I went backpacking there last weekend. Called DNR first, they said gate was locked at end of turkey season and will be locked until the next "major hunting season". That will be next fall. You can call DNR or look online for hunting season dates, but unless you hunt I think you probably don't want to be out there during hunting season. It is a nice place to hike when hunting is over and the gates are locked. Lots of birds - warblers, vireos, woodpeckers, etc. And other wildlife too.
