Skidmore Fountain

I first visited this area in 2013 and then again in 2018. I have great memories of my kids running around this beautiful fountain and walking the waterfront. Coming back in 2022, felt like coming back to a completely different place. The area is absolutely filthy. So are the surrounding areas. It did not feel safe walking there during the day. We didn’t even make it to the Portland sign. There are homeless tents and sleeping bags everywhere and I didn’t see any other folks walking around, maybe 90% were homeless. I really feel for them and something needs to be done to help these people. But I’m turned off from coming back to the downtown area.

I remember when I was a little kid and we used to go to Saturday market and Skidmore fountain always had food carts. It's one of my favorite spots in the city to enjoy a moment of contemplation and history. It's definitely one of the off the beaten path destinations that everyone should journey to.

It's bright and clean at night now. Feels much safer. We were there at midnight. Quite pleased. Except what happened to the human beings? I hope they're all safe.
