While the water does get cleaner every year it still not clean enough for clams to be harvested and sold. These clams have to be "relayed" to cleaner areas in order for consumers being able to buy them. I live less than 1/4 mile from Raritan Bay, but most people who use the beaches are there for a tan. You can swim but if you do stay in the water for less than ten minutes. Shower yourself immediately after you are back on the sand.
You can swim, but there is no lifeguard.
I've seen kids swim but that is not the norm. To many pebbles and rocks mixed in the sand. So mostly for fishing and looking.
