We took an uber to w 181st and Plaza Lafayette. We walked up Plaza Lafayette towards Riverside Drive. We then took a right on Riverside Drive and walked towards a traffic stop that had a zebra crossing. We crossed to this funny looking bridge and just walked across it. Once the bridge ends there's a sort of winding path going down and we just followed that path. We kept walking down the path and onto the road till we hit the lighthouse. The confusing bit is where the path ended onto the road. You have to keep following the road once you get off the winding path. If you turn and walk the other way on that road you apparently end up at the cloisters (or so we were told).

I found YouTube and web pages that describe how you got there but they all say it's very sketchy and that's not what I've heard and all the comments here.
