U can use dead or alive I always use dead I cut it into half and use both on one hook I catch a lot of catfish doing that with a floater about 2 foot from the hook.the bigger the blue gills the bigger u can catch only if u there on weekends for the tournament to win money all fish 30 inches must be back into water because they r for the tournament I hope this works out thank u keep on fishing
