So I can't just go and find a telescope set up for me, right?

As others have said the main scope is only available during scheduled programs. Since anyone can take their scope there any time, you might want to see when some special astronomical event (meteor shower, conjunction, etc) is going to take place and try then. We were there on two different nights with our scope and only a couple other people showed up. it was no a night when there was a scheduled program.

There were regular times for using the huge telescope. Then out on the plaza around a dozen people had set their own telescopes up for anyone who wanted to look.

No, during program times they have a large telescope setup for people to see. As well as others bringing their personal rigs in. Lots of room to set you own up and friendly folks that are willing to help set up if your new.
