You must remove the bird from the cage. It's okay to let it fly around for awhile. When you're finished just leave the door of the cage open and put it some fresh food. The bird will eventually return to eat. Or place the bird in his transport carrier while cleaning the cage. Your choice.
Removing bird from cage and doing whatever it takes to keep it calm is the best idea.
