I just bought an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M479 and the directions and website are not very clear how to download a driver for my computer and how to connect the unit to my wireless network.

The printer DVD or CD software should come with it for you to download the driver to your computer. If there is no DVD or CD software, likely you may go to manufacture's website, and look for driver download. Search your printer's model number, start download from there.
