We do a fast at the beginning of the year (to note - time of year is irrelevant to the fast. You are free to fast at anytime). The purpose of the fast is to center you thoughts and get closer to Jesus Christ by giving up something that is dear to you and in that time that your do that certain thing you pray, read devotionals, meditate on the word of God.
