Always is a mighty long time. It has been an important park as a symbol of the Stonewall Riots since 1969. Placed on National Historic Register in 1999.
Yes its always been there. They've just recently updated it to be more inclusive of gender equality and the LGBTQ community.
After a citywide fire in 1835, citizens petitioned for more park space. At that time the park was built.
