Its actually pretty cool: 1.They promote getting outside instead of focusing on buy, buy, buy (which is pretty bold for a store to do. Shows where their priorities truly are). 2. Stores can give good deals whenever they want, it doesn't have to be the day after Thanksgiving (or even worse, starting at 5pm on Thanksgiving) 3. Their website is still open for business on Black Friday 4. They pay their employees that day to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. I enjoy Black Friday deals, and benefit from them every year. But REI choosing to #optoutside makes them a business worth believing in.

#optoutside , look it up. To allow their employees to get outside and do what they love. Are you working today??

NO

Sounds like a good plan if you care more about your employees' holiday time with families than profits. #optoutside

It's part of the company culture. They encourage people to go outside on black Friday rather than go shopping.

Its well known REI closes and gives all employees that day off. They have done so for a few years now. Good news is they will be open tomorrow and nothing you woukd have bought today will have been sold on black friday.

Because there are more important things to do than shop. Like spending time with friends and family. And if you can spend some of that time together out in nature, all the better.
