When the church was built there, the area was known as Straw on old maps.
Based upon historical records and anecdotal recordings, the original church (built in the late 1700's), is assumed to have a 'straw', or thatched, roof. Thus the nickname for St. James Lutheran Church as 'Straw Church'.
