We actually do not need it, however we do require everyone to sign out of their iCloud account on their iPhone before we can create a repair. This is an Apple requirement (not just GatorTec). In order to sign out of your iCloud account you will need to know the username and password.
It depends on what is being fixed. Your phone may be trying to update the iOS software and it would be a good idea to backup your iphone to iCloud and iTunes before doing so
