Not bad. I've taken my kids out there when they were way younger...they loved it and my youngest is thirteen now and we still go from time to time. The rules say no shooting up close and there are refs in each group. I would still wear long sleeves maybe two shirts. Plus they have padded chest things they let you wear just ask them.
It only hurts for kids 10 and under
Have him wear layers of loose clothes plus the have body shields as well
Snap yourself with a big rubber band. Most people won't go Ham at close range with young people. A good handful of us will call you out of if you are in a losing position at close range. A bad and quick response to that usually means that you are going to get shot within ten feet.
They may hurt leaving some welts but the pain is mostly in the moment and goes quickly. Most people won't shoot or won't shoot that much within 10 feet or so. Just wear though gear and you will do fine.
It really depends on how close you are. If you follow the rules you should be ok. We had 4 kids with us and they did fine. But if you are too close and get hit outside the pads it will leave a welt.
