Last I knew appointments were still required, but I need an to get an update
Mostly yes, just Google NYC DMV appointment and it will take you to the appointment website. If you are just renewing your non-driver's ID and you are not getting the Real or Enhanced ID, and you have the renewal form, then you can renew online.
