This system has worked for me!
Hello! No, not at all. Anytime is a good time to clean out a nesting box, except when the birds are nesting in it. ;-) We generally advocate cleaning out a box after the young birds have fledged. You may get a second or third brood (in the case of Bluebirds), and you'll want to make sure the box is cleaned out of old debris to ensure success of the new nest. In Fall and Winter, some birds such as Downy Woodpeckers will use a Bluebird-sized box for roosting overnight. How to clean? Wear rubber gloves, remove the old nesting material, hose out any debris. Get a small bucket of water, add a tblsp of bleach or white vinegar, use a brush to swab the inside of the box. Let air dry, put back up. If you'd rather bring the box in for the winter, put it out again in March or April.
