The shelter only holds pets for a fixed amount of time for the owners to claim them before they put them up for adoption to the general public. If you don't check regularly with the shelter after losing your pet, they can legally adopt him out to anyone else who is interested in him. Getting a lawyer isn't going to do anything to help you. My advice is that you rescue another dog & get him/her microchipped (which would've prevented your dog from being adopted out b/c the shelter would've been able to get in touch with you as soon as your dog came into their shelter). Otherwise, call it a hard lesson learned & if you lose your dog in the future, know that you need to stay in regular contact with the shelter(s) so this doesn't happen again.
I would call a lawyer and ask them what I can do, and O would go into the shelter and ask why this happened. What kind of dog?
