You will will have to sand the old finish off prior. Otherwise the new stain will not take.

Lee, There are various methods and ways to stain and top cost your existing floor.. there's a lot of new products on the market that do not require sanding, however it depends on the finish that you want.. Your best bet is to do a little more research at your local home depot or lowes and talk to the pros desk to get more information on particular products.. Hope this helps.. good luck !.👍
