Independently operating local butchers Adolph Burckhardt, Thomas Papworth, Morton M. Spaulding, James and John O’Shea and Emanuel Masy joined together in 1893 to form the Union Meat Company. In 1906, Swift & Company purchased their assets, though their operations continued to be known locally as the Union Meat Company.
From their "about" page: After Swift Meat Packing acquired the Union Meat Company in 1907, Kenton was born a company town with a big dream: to become the meat packing center of the Pacific Coast. By 1958, the neighborhood had grown into a modern-day meat utopia, making Portland the leader of the West Coast cattle trade.
