Buy a aluminum tray push down on one side to make a slide and poke holes in the tray and cover the burners I would only do this once and clean right after use

If you are referring to over the U burner... you should always use the briquette trays as if you should grill with a lot of sauce or fatty meats, you can cause a grease fire as well as cause damage to the burner. The trays are there to not only protect the burner but dispurse and radiate the heat. If you are using a Prosear Burner... you do not use any briquette trays as they are never meant to use the trays. The grills are not designed to grill over an open flame. Hope this helps. Happy grilling!
