I'm in need of a handgun. Preference being a 38 revolver. For protection and piece of mind. How long is the background check and what are some prices I'd be expecting?

Well you have to start off with going to the sheriff's Dept. And getting e permit to purchase a hand gun. I think it usually takes about a week. But not sure. And the prices vary a lot depending on the model and manufacturer. I'd look on line and check prices
