Hi Vic, It is not necessary to remove the previous color prior to a color change. In fact there is no way to "remove" the black from your seat covers. During prepping you will remove some of the black colorant from the surface, but it is not necessary nor to be expected to remove the black. You will need to clean the leather using the leather cleaner first, follow up with our leather prep, and then sand. This will help to break down and remove dirt, oil, and debris from the leather along with break down and remove some of the original finish. This also opens the pores of the leather making it more excepting of the dye. You will just need to watch during the application to ensure the dye is not getting to thick or heavy leaving a fake plastic look.
