Sometimes they can tell with just a visual look in the mouth. But, if they see a tooth that needs treatment they would still need to anesthetize and do an xray.

Hi Irmi, To find out if a tooth needs to be pulled, your pup will need to be put under anesthesia and have xrays taken. Animals do not have the ability to hold still long enough to get a good xray.
