I have a 1TB backup drive that may not boot any longer and I am suspicious of its contents. What should I do with it?

Failure to boot a hard drive is almost always caused by physical damage or wear. I would suggest reinstalling any software or drivers that came with the device, and if the computer still does not recognize it at all, take it to a data retrieval specialist.
