Amazon Kindle and eBooks. High school kids don't want books that take up space.
War and Peace
I highly recommend "1984" by George Orwell.
You could introduce her to your favorites, & see if she has similar taste. There's so many options, you would just have to experiment.
Shakespeare is always good to be familar with
They have books on any and all subjects
Barnes and Noble has beautiful hardbacks both fancy and nice with dust jacket . As far as titles go it depends on her taste. My daughter loves Jane Austin, Sherlock Holmes, and Wuthering Heights. Barnes and Noble also has paperback editions at very good prices. My Grandmother introduced me to books I love to this day.
Grandmothers love to give books! But I agree, most teens do their reading electronically. A gift certificate for books from whatever medium she uses would be greatly appreciated. It's likely that in college or afterward, she may develop favorites. Young folks today move so often that lugging boxes of books around becomes difficult. But.....if you'd really like to give her a special book, think of one of your absolute favorites. Give it to her with a note telling her when and where you first read it and why, years later it still holds special meaning. Then express why you thought she might like it and your hope that perhaps the two of you might talk about it sometime.
The e-books are good advice, either the kindle or the nook.
