You've likely long since solved this but you may have just needed new or resharpened jointer knives. Alternatively, if you have a bench and can quickly make a plane hook (a jig like a shooting board but long enough for your work), then you can easily tune a No. 6 or No. 7. Jointer (bench plane) to joint by hand. I do it often on highly figured wood and it works beautifully.
They do, but... all their tools are at the high end of the price scale.
