Also, we have sand in the bottom of our geckos tank. Sometimes when he grabs the crickets he eats a bit of the sand...is this going to hurt him?

If he ingests enough of it yes it can cause impaction. You can either feed him outside of his tank or get another substrate.

YES! Put young leopard geckos on something like reptile carpet until they get their aim in check or they will ingest the sand and result in impact ion, which is lethal.
