Never tried without a receipt, so am not sure.
If it was paid with a credit card or a debit card, they'll look it up that way. And if they can't find it, it will be refunded to you for the current sale price which most of the times is a lot less than what was paid for the item.

Maybe if you used your credit card they look it up.
I'm not sure. If they are like most stores you can(some have 7 days) but it's for what that item is priced at the time you are exchanging it.
