If I leave the OPERS employment and go back into the private sector, must I take my 12 years of contributions at that time or can I just leave the money in OPERS until I turn 65 next year?

By all means leave it in opers. You are vested and will be able to claim that. There will be the offset with SSI, but leave it so you have a little extra

I'm pretty sure you can leave your money in opers but you should call them and discuss it with them
