Goodwill actually purchases those returned Target items to resale in their store. I'd be curious to know the purchase price Goodwill pays, but I could only imagine it's pennies on the dollar. The resold items are marked at roughly half of the absolute highest price the "management" can find online. I made inquiries in multiple Goodwill locations as to why the prices of the Target items as well as regularly donated thrift items has risen so high. I was told that the rise in prices was to cover all the altruistic work Goodwill does, such as their training program and the employment of people that are otherwise unemployable elsewhere. The employees I ask all spouted out the same answer as if it was rehearsed or they had been conditioned to say it. I personally think it's corporate greed like another Local Guide mentioned. There were also a wealth of stories going about concerning the CEO of Goodwil so the stores put up a print that said something about the CEO driving a sensible car n
Corporate greed. Not goodwill.
The key to shopping anywhere whether it is Macy's or the Goodwill is to know YOUR limitations. If I don't think it's a good bargain, I am not buying it. Another thing I do is shop only on half-priced day at the outlet. Let's face it, if we never bought another item from the Goodwill, we would all be okay. What that means is that shopping at Goodwill is not a life or death experience.
Similar to Habitat for Humanity's Restores, you'll notice that the word "retail" is often applied to locations though "thrift" is never used. So according to themselves they are retail stores and alonside every corporate giant will sell things as high as the public is willing to pay for it.
That is happening in all the Goodwill store's poor management.
