HD changed their policy and you need a receipt for any and all returns. If you bought it on a HD credit card then receipts are linked to your account and they can scan that.
I believe if you use your credit/debit card they might be able to but if you used old fashion cash then you might be out of luck
Hence the reason to get an email receipt. Best receipt keeper for records.
They took my phone number incase I lost my receipt so yes I think you can return it and I used cash.
