Orleans Parish, in which The City of New Orleans exists, sits on both sides of the Mississippi River. Algiers is the neighborhood of the city that is on the west bank. By the way, Jefferson parish also straddles the river. The city of Gretna in Jefferson parish sits adjacent to Algiers in Orleans parish.
