Yes, you do need a deposit if paying cash. This deposit as opposed to using a credit card protects the hotel from damages, incidentals, and/or cancellations. The reason I know is because a friend of mine stayed their for two months. But of course, nothing beats calling to make certain this is still in place.
I am not positive, but I would assume so especially if you are scheduling a room in advance. I would suggest calling this hotel directly and asking the front desk. They were super customer oriented and this is a much nicer hotel than the other Comfort Inn which we stayed in that is a mile from the Durham VA and other Hospitals. If you use a debit or credit card to reserve they will only charge you if you fail to show and don't cancel in a timely manner. Please call the Front Desk and ask them directly.
