In a Final Rule published September 19, 2018, the FMCSA has removed the requirement to seek exemption for insulin-dependent diabetic drivers. As of Monday, November 19, 2018, certified medical examiners are allowed to grant these drivers a One Year Medical Examiner’s Certificate. The CME must receive an Insulin-Treated Diabetes Mellitus (ITDM) Assessment Form from the drivers treating clinician, that states the driver is on a stable insulin treatment regimen and is in control of their diabetes. It is still up to the CME to determine whether or not the driver meets the physical qualification standards of the FMCSA.
